BBC chief political correspondent Laura Kuenssberg is to join ITV in the newly created role of business editor.

Kuenssberg, one of the TV stars of the BBC’s 2010 general election coverage, will join ITV in September and contribute to the broadcaster’s ITV1 bulletins and current affairs strand Tonight.

During her time at the BBC, Kuenssberg has reported for BBC News, Newsnight, the Today programme, and BBC Breakfast, as well as various presenting duties; most notably filling in for Jeremy Paxman on Newsnight, presenting the Daily Politics alongside Andrew Neil and anchoring the coverage of the aftermath of the 2010 leaders debates on the BBC. Before joining the corporation, she worked for Channel 4 News and NBC.

Kuenssberg said she was “delighted” to be moving to ITV; “The BBC has been an integral part of my life for more than a decade and I will always be grateful for the experiences I have been given.

“But while families round the UK cope with the squeeze and the country grapples with making its living, moving to cover British business is an even more exciting prospect. I’m really delighted to be joining ITV, and thrilled about the range of opportunities I’ll have as the ITV News business editor.”

ITV News editor Deborah Turness said: “Laura has an impressive track-record and I’ve admired her sharp journalism and drive. I can’t wait to see her talent flourish and grow with us in such a key position.”

She is also one of the most high profile UK journalists on Twitter, using the social networking service to deliver breaking news. Her professional account, @BBCLauraK, has almost 60,000 followers but she will be transferring to @ITVLauraK when she begins her new job.

This is the second time in as many months that Channel 4 and ITV News producer ITN has poached a top member of the BBC’s journalistic team; in May Channel 4 News hired Matt Frei, anchor of the BBC World News America, to be its Washington correspondent, and Newsnight’s Jackie Long to be social affairs editor.

After a major reorganisation of the BBC’s South East region, with the London area splitting away to form its own separate region. The previous programme, Newsroom South East, had gradually decreased in its coverage as certain areas were switched to receive over regional news programmes. A new programme for the new South East, South East Today launched shortly before Newsroom South East, effectively broadcasting solely to the London area, became BBC London News.

It is being reported that the BBC is considering proposals to “slim-down” the BBC News channel, concentrating on “developing news and headlines”. Plans are also being discussed which include increasing commercial income from its journalism as part of drives to cut costs by 20%.

The details were revealed in a leaked document; Director General Mark Thompson’s “Delivering Quality First” (DQF) initiative. The paper outlines savings have to be made in the BBC’s News output totalling “£89m in overall savings between 2013/14 and 2016/17″.

There are also ongoing discussions about the future of BBC Parliament, which include talks to bring it even closer to the award winning “Democracy Live” website, to make the channel “more cost effective and accessible”. The channel is already streamed on the website along with video archives of proceedings in all the UK’s democratic institutions, as well as the European Parliament in Brussels and Strasbourg.

The cuts are a result of the six-year licence fee freeze the BBC agreed with the government in October and Thompson has asked staff to come up with ideas as to how they can be achieved while maintaining the quality of the corporation’s content and services.

There have been a number of leaks of ideas spouted from the DQF proposals, including merging local radio and BBC Radio 5 Live akin to commercial broadcasters, simulcasting the BBC News Channel on BBC2 during the daytime as well as cutting children’s programming on BBC One and cutting BBC One’s budget as a whole. However, which of these (if any) will actually happen and to what extent, is unknown.

A BBC News spokeswoman said: “No decisions have been taken and any decisions coming out of the Delivering Quality First process would be subject to approval by the BBC Trust.”

The BBC has announced that Gordon Burns will be standing down from BBC North West Tonight at the end of September 2011, after almost 15 years of presenting the programme.

He will continue to work with the BBC presenting a new radio show on Radio Manchester and Radio Lancashire, on Sunday mornings from September.

On his departure, Burns said: “It will be a great wrench to leave the programme I have been proud to present for nearly a decade and a half. I’ve enjoyed it enormously and I regard it as a real privilege to have been in the homes of people across the North West for so many years delivering the news to them. I have enjoyed a great relationship with the North West Tonight audience and I think I’ll miss that most of all.

“I’m pleased that I won’t be missing out on the excitement of the big move [to the new MediaCity in Salford] as I’ll be heading over there with my brand new show on Radio Manchester and Radio Lancashire. But for the next six months I will continue to concentrate on co-presenting North West Tonight with all the enthusiasm and dedication I can muster in the constant bid to produce programmes of the very highest standard.”

Born in Belfast in 1948, he went on to quench his thirst for sport and sports news by working on the BBC’s long running radio programme Sports Report before joining Ulster Television as a sports editor and programme producer in 1967. Whilst at UTV, he presented the channel’s news programme, UTV Report before crossing the Irish sea to front Granada TV’s nightly news programme, Granada Reports.

As well as presenting BBC North West Tonight since 1997, he is also very well known across the country for presenting The Krypton Factor, a prime time ITV show for almost 20 years which first hit the airwaves in 1977, attracting audiences over 15 million in number. Gordon not only presented the show but he wrote all the scripts for the programme and also helped devise many of the mentally challenging rounds. He has lived in Manchester for 30 and is married with two grown-up children and two grandchildren.

A decision is yet to be made on a successor to Gordon Burns. Ranvir Singh will continue to co-present North West Tonight when the programme moves to the new MediaCityUK development in Salford Quays.

BBC North West Tonight’s 6.30pm programme has a current weekly audience of 1.5 million, over half a million more than that of ITV rivals Granada Reports at 6pm, with 990,000.

Less than half of the staff of BBC Breakfast have decided to make the move to Salford when the programme moves into MediaCityUK in spring 2012, with popular presenters Sian Williams and Chris Hollins among the 54% opting to stay in London.

The programme’s staff had until midnight on March 31st to make their choice. Presenters Bill Turnbull and Susanna Reid are moving, but Williams and Hollins have decided not to go, although the BBC says both will continue to be involved in the programme for the foreseeable future.

BBC Breakfast’s editor, Alison Ford said: “It is great news that lots of the team will be coming to Salford with the programme next year.

We always knew there would be those who wouldn’t be able to make the move for domestic reasons, but we’ll have a really strong line-up of producers and presenters working together in MediaCity. We’re enjoying huge success at the moment and I’m confident that’s going to continue for years to come.”

The BBC’s Director of News, Helen Boaden added: “The move of Breakfast is another important step in marking the BBC’s commitment to expand its presence beyond London… I am sure it will go from strength to strength in its new home.”

The government has approved News Corporation’s controversial bid to takeover BSkyB, on the condition that Sky News would be “spun off” into a separate company.

In an announcement this afternoon, Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt MP confirmed that Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp had offered a series of undertakings in order to assuage concerns about the planned takeover’s effect on media plurality. The proposal, first announced last year, would result in News Corp buying the remaining 60.9% of Sky that it does not already own.

The undertakings would lead to News Corp jettisoning the 24-hour news channel Sky News, which would be split off from BSkyB and reconstituted as an independent public limited company, apparently to be called “NewsCo”.

More soon.
